Back to Our News PageKentucky-bred Monomoy Girl, a two-time Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) winner and Eclipse Champion, provided the fireworks at Fasig-Tipton’s Night of Stars on Sunday, Nov. 8, selling to Spendthrift Farm for $9.5 million, marking the third-highest price for a filly or mare ever at the sale.
Monomoy Girl is one of the most accomplished race mares in recent history. A seven-time Grade 1 winner, the accomplished 5-year-old mare owns victories in the Kentucky Oaks (G1), the Acorn S. (G1), the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), Ashland S. (G1) and La Troienne S. (G1) in addition to her two scores in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1). Champion 3-Year-Old Filly of 2018, Monomoy Girl missed her 2019 season and is unbeaten this year in four starts. Her win in Saturday’s Distaff all but secured her a second year-end championship. Her new connections have announced that she will remain in training next year with Brad Cox.
A daughter of Tapizar—Drumette, by Henny Hughes, Monomoy Girl was part of the Elite Sales consignment. The only two fillies or mares to ever sell for more at the November sale were also bred in Kentucky—Better Than Honour, who sold for $14 million in 2008, and Havre de Grace who sold for $10 million in 2012. Multiple champion Songbird, like Monomoy Girl, sold for $9.5 million in 2017.
Additional headlining sales from Sunday night included Grade 1-winning Kentucky-breds Rushing Fall, who sold for $5.5 million, Midnight Bisou, who brought $5 million, and Bast, who fetched $4.2 million. Agent Jamie McCalmont signed the ticket for Rushing Fall on behalf of Coolmore’s M.V. Magnier. Allen Racing’s Chuck Allen bought out his partners in Midnight Bisou, and Spendthrift acquired Bast.
Topping the weanling portion of the catalog at $600,000 was a Kentucky-bred colt by first-crop sire City of Light. Consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, agent, and purchased by OXO Equine, the bay colt is out of the winning Into Mischief mare Breaking Beauty, a half-sister to Graded stakes winner Osidy.
The breeding stock sales continue over the next two weeks with the Keeneland November sale.
