Stonestreet Stables’ Kentucky-bred Clairiere has kept top company throughout her career, but on Sept. 25 at PARX, the regally-bred daughter of Curlin had her day in the spotlight, winning the $1 million Cotillion S. (G1) for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Ridden by Ricardo Santana, Clairiere overcame a slow early pace and rallied strongly in the stretch to win the 1 1/16-mile test by 2 ½ lengths over fellow Kentucky-bred Obligatory, covering the distance in 1:44.31 for trainer Steve Asmussen. Kentucky-bred Army Wife was third, rounding out a sweep of the top three spots by runners bred in the Bluegrass.

“She was away from the gate good, and was carrying really, really well,” Asmussen shared with PARX Publicity, “and I can’t tell you what it means for Clairiere and Stonestreet, and that family she comes from. She was carrying along nicely within herself (and) within striking range.”

The win made Clairiere a millionaire with her bankroll now standing at $1,190,992 and she improved her overall record to 9-3-3-2. Prior to the Cotillion, Clairiere finished second to Malathaat in the Alabama S. (G1) and was third in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), both at Saratoga. She annexed the Rachel Alexandra S. (G2) in February and after a runner-up effort in the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2), she finished fourth in the Kentucky Oaks.

“She’s kept herself in great company all year and (is) getting good when it matters most,” Asmussen said.

Clairiere, a Stonestreet-bred daughter of Curlin, is produced from the multiple grade 1-winning Bernardini mare Cavorting, winner of the Ogden Phipps S. (G1), Personal Ensign S. (G1), and the Test S. (G1) en route to career earnings of $2,063,000.
