Lexington, KY – INDIAN MISS, dam of Grade 1 winners MITOLE and HOT ROD CHARLIE, named the 2021 Broodmare of the Year.  ESSENTIAL QUALITY led the awards presented to Godolphin being honored as the Kentucky-Bred Horse of the Year and as the Kentucky-Bred Champion Three-Year-Old Male.  Additional awards presented to Godolphin include MAXFIELD being named Kentucky-Bred Champion Older Dirt Horse, MYSTIC GUIDE being honored as the Kentucky-Bred Champion Racing Abroad, KTDF Owner & Breeder of the Year.  Moreover, Godolphin was named the P.A.B. Widener Trophy winner, best known as the KTOB Breeder of the Year.

Five merit awards were presented to individuals for their contributions to the Kentucky Thoroughbred Industry.

2021 Merit awards will be presented at the KTOB Luncheon:

  • P.A.B. Widener Trophy for KTOB Breeder of the Year: GODOLPHIN
  • Hardboot Breeders’ Award pays tribute to distinctive but unsung breeders that help make up the backbone of our industry: HARGUS & SANDRA SEXTON
  • Charles W. Engelhard Award acknowledges a member of the media for outstanding coverage of the Thoroughbred industry: ALICIA HUGHES
  • William T. Young Humanitarian Award distinguishes a person or organization in the thoroughbred industry “who recognizes and promotes the human endeavor:” HONORABLE EARLE I. MACK
  • Lifetime Contribution Award acknowledged the contributions of DR. PETER J. TIMONEY for his practical application of science and steadfast commitment to equine health that helped create the Gluck Center as a world -renowned research institution and enabled Central Kentucky to become the leading American exporter of horses to markets on six continents.

Also to receive awards are the top Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund (KTDF) money earners in 2021 in five separate categories.

2021 Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund (KTDF) Leaders:

  • KTDF Earner of the Year: GEAR JOCKEY (Calumet Farm)

Recipients of the 2021 KTOB Kentucky-Bred Champion awards were voted on by the full membership of KTA/KTOB while the KTDF category leaders were tabulated using purse money won at KY racetracks in 2021.  KTOB merit award recipients were voted on by the KTA/KTOB Board of Directors.

In existence since 1967 and 1983, respectively, the KTOB and KTA direct their efforts toward promoting and protecting the Thoroughbred industry by maintaining the highest levels of racing, breeding and training standards in the Commonwealth.
