Back to Our News PageAn accomplished field of eight, headed by Grade 1 winners Stilleto Boy, Proxy, and Rattle N Roll will decide the $1 million Stephen Foster S. (G1), a “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), at Ellis Park on Saturday, July 1.
Steve Moger’s Stilleto Boy achieved Grade 1 glory two starts back in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1). The son of Shackleford is based in California with trainer Ed Moger and jockey Kent Desormeaux will ride. Stilleto Boy, who finished third behind Proxy in the Oaklawn Handicap after setting the pace, drew post position No. 2 for the Stephen Foster. A winner in four of 22 lifetime starts, Stilleto Boy has amassed earnings of more than $1.8 million. He was bred in Kentucky by John and Iveta Kerber.
Godolphin’s homebred Proxy, trained by Mike Stidham, won the Oaklawn H. (G2) in late April and he captured last year’s Clark S. (G1) at Churchill Downs. The son of Tapit also finished second in this year’s Santa Anita H. (G1) and owns five career wins from 16 starts while banking $1,775,970. Joel Rosario has the mount, and they will break from the rail.
Run at 1 1/8 miles, the Stephen Foster field also includes multiple graded stakes winner Smile Happy, who will be ridden by Corey Lanerie and will break from post No. 5. Owned by Lucky Seven Stable and trained by Ken McPeek, Smile Happy captured the Alysheba S. (G2) at Churchill Downs in his most recent outing. He has won four of eight starts in his career and banked $1,019,890. The son of Runhappy was bred in Kentucky by Moreau Bloodstock and White Bloodstock.
Smile Happy will be joined in the starting gate by stablemate and another Lucky Seven colorbearer in Grade 1 winner Rattle N Roll. The McPeek-trained charge has won three consecutive graded races—the Ben Ali S. (G3), Pimlico Special (G3), and the Blame S. (G3)—and is a winner in eight of 18 overall. At two, Rattle N Roll won the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland, defeating Double Thunder and Classic Causeway. The 2019 son of Connect was bred in Kentucky by St. Simon Place.
The field also includes Kentucky-bred West Will Power. Owned and bred by Gary and Mary West and trained by Brad Cox, West Will Power most recently finished third behind Smile Happy in the Alysheba Stakes after winning the New Orleans Classic S. (G2) in his previous start at the Fair Grounds.
