Kentucky-bred Just F Y I remained undefeated and scored her second Grade 1 victory with a determined win in the $2,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on Future Stars Friday at Santa Anita.
George Krikorian’s homebred put away odds-on favorite Tamara at the top of the stretch and held off a late rally from Jody’s Pride to win the 40th running of the Juvenile Fillies. Trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Junior Alvarado, Just F Y I covered the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:44.58. It was the 13th Breeders’ Cup victory for Mott and second for Alvarado.
“She broke tremendously,” shared Mott. “I was a little worried she was going to get a little too rank, but once she got position, she looked like she was settled down. You had to worry about how fast they were going because the filly (Tamara) Mike (Smith) was on is pretty fast. We got lucky. We had a great trip, and she came into the race in great order and she showed us what she could do.”
Just F Y I is a Kentucky-bred daughter of Justify out of the Street Cry (IRE) mare Star Act. Unbeaten in three starts, Just F Y I increased her bankroll to $1,317,750 with the $1,040,000 winner’s share of the lucrative purse. In her previous outing, Just F Y I won the Frizette S. (G1) by 3 ¾ lengths over a sloppy track at the Belmont at the Big A meet.
