Klaravich Stables’ Kentucky homebred Domestic Product ran down favorite Prince of Monaco late to record an impressive victory in the $500,000 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes (G1) at Saratoga on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Jockey Flavien Prat had ridden both Domestic Product and Prince of Monaco entering the race. He opted to ride the former in the Jerkens Memorial. Domestic Product broke a step slow and settled well off the pace in last early in the 11-horse field. He rallied five wide into the stretch, gained a short lead near the sixteenth-pole, and battled with Prince of Monaco to the wire. In a driving finish, Domestic Product prevailed by a neck, stopping the clock in 1:21.71 for the seven furlongs.

Like Father Like Son

Trained by Chad Brown, Domestic Product is a son of Practical Joke, who won the 2017 Jerkens Memorial.

“This horse has always been a high-quality horse,” said Brown. “I thought enough of him to run him in the Kentucky Derby. Right after the Derby I started to work backward from this race and I told Seth [Klarman] that we were going to try to do the same thing we did with his sire and cut him back on Travers Day, and it worked.

“I wasn’t feeling too well when he broke slow, but as he started to move up during the race he did it in a way, inside other horses, where it didn’t look like he was using up too much energy to improve his position,” Brown added. “I was optimistic at least turning for home, and then as I saw him just gobbling up ground late, I thought he’d have a chance near the wire. He nosed out a very, very good horse.”

By Practical Joke, Domestic Product is produced from the Paynter mare Goods and Services. Winner of this year’s Tampa Bay Derby (G3) and the Dwyer S. (G3) in his previous outing, Domestic Product is now a winner in four of nine starts with earnings of $729,200.
