Kentucky-bred Win for the Money did just what his name implies, winning the $1 million Woodbine Mile S. (G1) on Saturday, Sept. 14. With the victory, Win for the Money earned a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Del Mar.

Trained by Mark Casse for Live Oak Plantation, Win for the Money received a smart ride from Patrick Husbands. The pair rode the raill to a 1 ½-length score, stopping the clock in a fast 1:32.11. It was the first graded stakes score for Win for the Money, a gelded son of Mohaymen.

“I must say, I give out respect to Mark (Casse),” said Husbands. “I had a perfect trip, I figured, if I come off the pace, it’s my best chance. So, when he breaks, and he breaks so relaxed, I was happy.”

Bred in Kentucky by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, Win for the Money was a $350,000 acquisition for Live Oak out of the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale, where he was consigned by Brick City Thoroughbreds. Win for the Money is produced from the War Chant mare Mayakoba.

“I did say earlier, I thought he might surprise some people. He’s been training well,” said Kathryn Sullivan, assistant trainer to Mark Casse. “Live Oak and on the turf, they have such a great history of turf horses, and he’d been doing really well. So, we were pretty confident.”

Win for the Money is now a winner in five of 16 lifetime starts. Additionally, the chestnut gelding has amassed career earnings of $794,997. He entered the Woodbine Mile off a second-place finish in the Kentucky Downs Preview Mint Millions Turf Mile Stakes at Ellis Park in August.
