Back to Our News PageBelmont Stakes (G1) winner Arcangelo followed his history-making score in the final leg of the Triple Crown with a facile win in the $1.25 million Travers S. (G1) at Saratoga on Saturday, Aug. 26. With the win in the 154th running of the historic Travers, he stakes his claim atop the 3-year-old rankings.
Ridden by Javier Castellano, Arcangelo’s win made trainer Jena Antonucci just the second woman to train a Travers champion, joining Mary Hirsch, who saddled Thanksgiving to win the Travers in 1938.
“The significance of accomplishing anything in any gender at the top of any sport or industry is a gift,” said Antonucci, who was annexing the fourth graded win of her training career. “It doesn’t come without the team and without every single person on our team. The significance of this is hard to put into words right now. Anyone that wants something bad enough, you just have to work your tail off for it. It doesn’t matter—man, woman, boy, girl—that’s just white noise. If you want it, go fight for it and make it happen for yourself.”
Owned by Jon Ebbert’s Blue Rose Farm, Arcangelo, who is by the late Arrogate who also captured the Travers, was making his first start since the June 10 Belmont Stakes. The gray ridgling swept past his rivals around the far turn and drew clear from a hard-trying Disarm in the lane. There was no denying the Belmont Stakes winner as he defeated Disarm by a length, stopping the clock in 2:02.23.
In victory, he defeated Kentucky Derby (G1) Mage and Preakness S. (G1) winner National Treasure, as well as reigning Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Forte in a loaded Travers field.
Bred in Kentucky by Don Alberto Corporation, Arcangelo has now earned $1,754,900. He was acquired by Ebbert for just $35,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. In addition to the Belmont Stakes, Arcangelo also won Belmont’s Peter Pan S. (G3) in May.
