Kentucky-bred Marketsegmentation led a classy field of fillies and mares from start to finish to win the $600,000 New York S. (G1) at Belmont Park on Friday, June 9.

Owned by Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables, Marketsegmentation took command of the 10-furlong turf test at the break and led the field through an opening quarter-mile in :24.56. Ridden by Jose Ortiz, the daughter of American Pharoah dictated proceedings through a half-mile in :50.26 and six furlongs in a comfortable 1:15.29. Rounding the far turn, Marketsegmentation had plenty in reserve and kicked clear of her rivals to score by three-quarters of a length. She covered the distance in 2:02.12 for trainer Chad Brown.

“She’s improved every race. She’s solid,” said Klarman. “She always tries. We thought she might be the only speed and it set up, and sometimes that’s dangerous. To win a race like this, a Grade 1, and to have a filly advance like that and another filly that ran third, it’s an exciting time.”

The victory provided Brown with a record fifth win in the New York S.

“She has gotten better every single race and you love to see horses like that,” said Brown.

Bred in Kentucky by Marcus Stables, Marketsegmentation is produced from the Medaglia d’Oro mare Loneliley (IRE). Her record now stands at 7-5-1-1 and the $330,000 winner’s share of the New York S. purse raised her bankroll to $638,730.
