Klaravich Stables’ Kentucky-bred Randomized took command of the $600,000 Alabama S. (G1) at Saratoga on Saturday, Aug. 12, and never looked back, taking the 143rd running of the prestigious race as much the best.
Ridden by Joel Rosario, Randomized cleared her rivals early, leading the field through a quarter-mile split in :23.45 seconds. After six furlongs in 1:12.33, Randomized raced wide off the turn, allowing race favorite and fellow Kentucky-bred Wet Paint room along the inside for her rally. There was no catching Randomized, however, who strolled home in hand to score by four lengths in a final time of 2:03.07 for trainer Chad Brown. Wet Paint finished second, 1 ½ lengths in front of third-place finisher Defining Purpose.
A daughter of Nyquist, Randomized was a $420,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale graduate bred in Kentucky by Cove Springs. Randomized is now an earner of $465,850 and is a winner in three of five lifetime starts.
“She was moving so well, nice and easy all around,” Rosario said. “She’s just a nice filly, but a mile and a quarter is a long way, so you have to have something always for the end. It looked like she did it really easy. I asked her turning for home, and it looked like she would just start running, so that was a really good performance.”
Brown indicated after the race, that Randomized could make her next start against older fillies and mares in the Spinster S. (G1) at Keeneland on Oct. 8, but the Cotillion S. (G1) also remains an option.
“I’m just going to enjoy this win,” Brown shared. “We didn’t really look beyond it when we committed to give this a try. The Cotillion is still in play, it’s quite a ways away still. It’s not that I wouldn’t go there, but it’s not a bad idea to think about Keeneland either.”
Randomized is produced from the unraced Elusive Quality mare French Passport, a half-sister to graded stakes-winning millionaire Smooth Air and Grade 2 winner Overdriven.
