Godolphin’s Kentucky-bred Sovereignty, winner of the Fountain of Youth S. (G2) in his last start, is the morning-line favorite for the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) on March 29 at Gulfstream Park. The 1 1/8-mile Triple Crown prep, which awards 100 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner, attracted a field of 10 runners.
Sovereignty, a homebred son of Into Mischief, drew post No. 10 for the 74th running of the Florida Derby. Trained by Bill Mott, Sovereignty made his 2025 debut in the Fountain of Youth. He made a sweeping last-to-first move to overtake River Thames to win by a neck. In his 2-year-old finale, Sovereignty broke his maiden in winning the Street Sense S. (G2) at Churchill Downs. Jockey Junior Alvarado maintains the mount in the Florida Derby.
Florida Derby Contenders Facing Sovereignty
SF Racing and partners’ Kentucky-bred Madaket Road is listed as the second choice on the morning line. Trained by Bob Baffert, Madaket Road most recently finished second in the Rebel S. (G2) at Oaklawn Park. Prior to that effort, the son of Quality Road finished third in the Robert B. Lewis S. (G3) at Santa Anita in his seasonal debut. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione has the call.
Trainer Todd Pletcher is set to send out Repole Stable and partners’ Kentucky-bred Disruptor. The son of Gun Runner, who was purchased for $1.15 million at the 2023 Keeneland September Sale, drew post No. 4 and is the 4-1 third choice on the morning line. Irad Ortiz Jr. has the return mount on Disruptor, who broke his maiden in eye-catching fashion in winning a seven-furlong maiden special weight at Gulfstream by 9 ¼ lengths in his last start.
WinStar Farm, CHC Inc, and Cold Press Racing’s Tappan Street is the fourth choice on the morning line. Runner-up in the Holy Bull S. (G3) in his last start, Tappan Street is trained by Brad Cox. The son of Into Mischief broke his maiden last December at Gulfstream in his only other outing. Luis Saez will ride the Kentucky-bred colt.
The Florida Derby is the 14th race at Gulfstream Park with a scheduled post time of 6:42 p.m. ET.
