Undefeated Tamara, a daughter of Bolt d’Oro out of the brilliant mare Beholder, headlines the $2,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and headlines a strong Kentucky-bred contingent entered in the Future Stars Friday card at Santa Anita on Nov. 3, the first of two days of racing in this year’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

Unbeaten and untested in two career starts, Tamara will look to follow in her dam’s footsteps. Hall of Famer Beholder won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) in 2012 and then won the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) twice during her historic career. Tamara broke her maiden in her Aug. 19 career debut at Del Mar. Overcoming a stumble, the bay filly won the 6 ½-furlong maiden special weight event stylishly, drawing off by 2 ¼ lengths in the end. She returned and dominated her rivals in the Del Mar Debutante (G1), winning that seven-furlong fixture by 6 ¾ lengths for trainer Richard Mandella.

A homebred for Spendthrift Farm, Tamara puts her winning streak on the line in the 1 1/16-mile Juvenile Fillies, which marks her initial start around two turns. Mike Smith is named to ride, and the pair is the prohibitive 4-5 favorite.

Among Tamara’s chief rivals is undefeated Grade 1 winner Candied. The daughter of Candy Ride (ARG) has an edge on her main foe as she has already successfully negotiated a route of ground. Candied won the Alcibiades S. (G1) at Keeneland on Oct. 6 by a length for trainer Todd Pletcher. Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Candied was bred in Kentucky by Buck Pond Farm. Candied will be ridden by Luis Saez and is listed at 4-1 on the morning line.

Contention runs deep in the Juvenile Fillies. The race also includes Kentucky-bred Grade 1 winners Just F Y I and Brightwork. Just F Y I, a homebred for George Krikorian, registered an impressive 3 3/4 -length win in the Frizette S. (G1) over a sloppy track during the Belmont at the Big A meet Oct. 7. Trained by Bill Mott, Just F Y I is a daughter of Justify and is out of the Street Cry (IRE) mare Star Act. Brightwork captured the Spinaway S. (G1) at Saratoga on Sept. 3 for trainer John Ortiz. The daughter of Outwork is owned by WSS Racing LLC and was bred in the Bluegrass by Wynnstay Inc and H. Allen Poindexter.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile

A competitive group of 11 will decide the $2,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). Kentucky-bred Locked is the 7-2 morning-line favorite and he is followed by Kentucky-breds Prince of Monaco, Timberlake, and Muth as co-second choices at odds of 4-1.

Locked notched a determined victory in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland in his last start. Owned by Walmac Farm and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and trained by Todd Pletcher, the son of Gun Runner is a winner in two of three lifetime starts and he will once again be ridden by Jose Ortiz. Locked was bred by Rosa Colasanti.

WinStar Farm and Siena Farm’s Timberlake proved a decisive 4 ¼-length winner of the Champagne S. (G1) over a sloppy surface in his most recent start during the Belmont at the Big A meet. The imposing son of Into Mischief finished second in his previous outing in the Hopeful S. (G1) at Saratoga. Bred by St. Elias Stables, Timberlake is trained by Brad Cox. Florent Geroux has been aboard for the colt’s four lifetime starts and he rides back on Friday.

Undefeated Prince of Monaco won the Del Mar Futurity (G1) last time out for SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, et al. The son of Speightstown is perfect in three starts for trainer Bob Baffert. He broke his maiden in his career debut and then won the Best Pal S. (G3) at Del Mar in his second start. Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Prince of Monaco is out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Rainer.

Baffert will also saddle Grade 1 winner Muth in the Juvenile. Winner of the American Pharoah S. (G1) in his most recent appearance, Muth broke his maiden by 8 ¾ lengths at Santa Anita in June and then finished second behind his stablemate Prince of Monaco in the Best Pal S. Owned by Zedan Racing Stables, the son of Good Magic was bred by Don Alberto Corporation.

Kentucky-breds are also plentiful in the additional Breeders’ Cup offerings on Future Stars Friday. Crimson Advocate and Valiant Force, winners during the prestigious Royal Ascot meet earlier in the year, are among the prominent contenders in the $1,000,000 Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1). Kentucky-bred She Feels Pretty, winner of the Natalma S. (G1) at Woodbine in September, is the 4-1 morning-line favorite in the Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1). And in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), Kentucky-breds Endlessly and Carson’s Run figure strongly against their international rivals.
