Kentucky-bred Thorpedo Anna had to work harder than expected, but the 3-year-old filly called on all her class to prevail in the $1 million Cotillion Stakes (G1) at PARX on Saturday, Sept. 21.

With regular rider Brian Hernandez aboard, Thorpedo Anna forced the pace along the rail early and then eased back to settle in third position. She angled out, split foes entering the stretch, and set sail after pacesetter Mystik Lake and Gun Song. With her patented strong finish, Thorpedo Anna collared a stubborn Gun Song close to home and scored by a neck at the wire, covering the 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.45.

In addition to the Cotillion, the leader of the 3-year-old filly division also won this year’s Kentucky Oaks (G1), the Acorn Stakes (G1), and the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) for trainer Kenny McPeek.

“A win is a win. I am going to take it,” McPeek said to BloodHorse.com. “I’m not complaining. Good ones overcome everything. She is head over heels above the 3-year-old fillies and as long as we didn’t have anything really silly happen—and it almost did—I felt really confident.”

Owned by Brookdale Racing, Mark Edwards, Judy Hicks, and Magdalena Racing, Thorpedo Anna improved her overall record to 9-7-2-0 and the $586,500 winner’s share of the Cotillion purse increased her lifetime bankroll to $2,817,163. Bred in Kentucky by Judy Hicks, Thorpedo Anna was acquired for $40,000 at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale. The daughter of Fast Anna-Sataves, by Uncle Mo, will target the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) at Del Mar.
